What We Got With 'Melo Deal

The star has landed! The star has landed! Yes, finally after a grueling couple of months the star is where he belongs. Last night the New York Knicks landed Carmelo Anthony in a blockbuster deal that sent some talent to Denver, but in the end the Knicks now have two superstar players suiting it up every night at the Garden. With the deal including Gallo, Felton, Chandler and Mozzy going to Denver to bring 'Melo here, I was very surprised at some Knicks fans reactions. Here's why.

I've heard that letting the young talent in Chandler, Gallo and Felton go was a huge mistake because they have not yet developed. Well, neither of those three guys that were mentioned are rookies first and foremost. So they do have experience. Felton is a third or fourth year point guard who gets up and down the floor and can lead an offensive charge. The point that we were only 28-26 with those players is baffling. Were the Knicks that much better with those four guys in the rotation? I don't really see it because a number 7 seed and possibly squeezing out a sixth seed was the best it would do anyway.

Now, for the rest of the year, Chauncey Billups will be able to contribute at the point guard spot alongside teammate Anthony. Stoudemire will still be called upon to provide his nightly dose of stats. Landry Fields is still a Knick and that was a huge keep. Corey Brewer comes over from Minnesota and can thrive in D'Antoni's run and gun system as he is a very quick and lanky wing player who can finish. Ronny Turiaf will provide minutes at the center spot along with probably newly acquired Shelden Williams. Yes, not the best combination, but good enough to bang around with other team's bigs.

All in all, the Knicks needed 'Melo and they got him. Chris Paul and Deron Williams along with Dwight Howard free up in the summer of 2012. To judge the Knicks by this season alone and jump down their throats for letting go four guys is simply unfair. So please fans, when analyzing the deal and critiquing the team at the Garden use reason rather than raw emotion. That's all I ask.
